The
only two photographs of the two vehicles at the scene of the fatal
crash.
These photographs were taken by a Charters Towers amateur photographer
shortly after this fatal crash at about 9:45pm on the 23rd November,
1961 that occurred about 200yards on the Townsville side of Chinaman
Creek [aka Third Creek - ie the 3rd creek from All Souls School] on the
then named Charters Towers Townsville roadway, now, in 2009 known as
the Flinders Highway. This was about 5 miles on the Townsville
side of Charters Towers.
The two vehicles, a Ford Zephyr MarkI sedan and an International Panel
Van, not moved since the impact that killed Mrs Susan Mary McVean
nee Byers, taken at the place of the collision about 200yards on the
Townsville side of Chinaman Creek [aka Third
Creek - ie the 3rd creek from All Souls School] on the then, in 1961,
named
Charters Towers Townsville roadway, now, in 2009, known as the Flinders
Highway, and that was about 5 miles on the Townsville side of Charters
Towers, and which collision occurred at about 9:45pm on the 23rd
November, 1961.
These are REAL COLOUR [it was early days, in 1961, for colour
photography and he was an
amateur photographer], photos of the smash online. These photos
set the scene
very well though. The vehicles had not been moved from the time
of the
impact. Blankets and a mattress had been removed from the back of
the van; hence the stuff on the ground. Apparently many photos
were taken but these are the only two viable ones.
